Since the Rams acquired Myles Garrett, the possibility of a reunion with Aaron Donald has been a frequent talking point. A return to action on the part of the latter has been considered since before that blockbuster trade, however.
Head coach Sean McVay spoke to reporters on Saturday, and he offered several remarks about the Donald situation. He noted (via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop) initial conversations between the two took place while the Rams were considering a move for Garrett. In the end, an agreement was reached with the Browns for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
Since then, Donald has continued to contemplate a return to action following a two-year absence. The 35-year-old recently conducted a workout, adding fuel to the fire regarding speculation about a high-profile comeback. A mutual interest continues to exist in this case, although finances have not yet been sorted out between team and player. It remains true that nothing is imminent with respect to a final decision, but the expectation inside and outside the Rams’ organization has grown regarding a return.
On that note, Fox Sports’ Eric Williams reports Donald is indeed “leaning toward returning.” No firm timeline is in place, although it will be interesting to see if a deal can be reached in time for the start of training camp or at least in advance of Week 1. One year remained on Donald’s contract at the time of his retirement, but the expectation remains that an arrangement will be made allowing for the eight-time All-Pro to suit up in 2026.
“We’ll see how his body’s responding to some of the training and the way that he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like to be ready to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail,” McVay said. “But this is his decision. He’s earned the right to be able to do it on his terms.”
McVay added he “genuinely” does not know what Donald will decide. The open invitation persists, though, and it is clear a reunion has been on the mind of both parties for some time now.
