Jaxson Dart is now on injured reserve, and attention is set to turn to his lengthy recovery process. The second-year Giants quarterback will have his knee surgery today.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports the procedure will focus primarily on Dart’s meniscus being fully repaired. It was already known Dart’s MCL would also be an area of focus for the surgery. Duggan’s update also names the PCL as something which could be repaired during the procedure.
A timeline of four to six months exists in this case. Dart is set to miss the remainder of the regular season as a result, and any potential return during the playoffs would certainly come as a surprise. New York’s offense will be led by veteran backup Jameis Winston for the time being, with Jake Haener also in place as depth. The Giants are expected to add a signal-caller through free agency or trade in the wake of the Dart injury.
It will be interesting to see how efforts on that front play out, but in any case Winston should be in line to handle QB1 duties moving forward. The former No. 1 pick is in his second Giants campaign, and he inked a two-year extension earlier this month. Winston will aim to provide New York with a high floor on offense, although his showing in Week 2’s loss to the Rams showed that improvement will be needed if that is to take place.
In any event, Dart’s focus will shift to recovery. The success of today’s procedure will obviously be key with respect to his ability to participate fully in 2027 offseason work. The 23-year-old’s rookie contract runs through 2028, with a fifth-year option covering the 2029 campaign potentially in play. For now, the focus for team and player will be aimed at a full recovery in Dart’s case. That process is set to begin once his surgery is complete.
