The Dolphins included Clelin Ferrell in their spree of cuts Monday, as they made room for seven waiver claims. Ferrell, however, is coming back on a practice squad deal. Miami is also adding former first-round D-lineman Mazi Smith to its taxi squad.
Today’s P-squad overhaul will also drop the Dolphins back to three quarterbacks, with the team cutting Mark Gronowski from its P-squad. Gronowski did not survive cutdown day, and the Dolphins used the waiver wire to add a third-stringer (ex-Jets backup Brady Cook).
After spending Monday changing nearly a sixth of their roster, the Dolphins are building their P-squad today. The Dolphins signed linebacker Liam Anderson, edge rusher Amari Gainer, defensive lineman Jordan Miller, wide receiver Will Sheppard, cornerback Jaylin Simpson and tight end Tre Watson.
Although the Cowboys have perhaps the best first-round track record of any team this century, they missed on Smith. The Michigan-developed run stuffer did not make a big impact in Dallas, barely making their 53-man roster after starting 17 games in 2024. The Cowboys included Smith as a throw-in piece in their Quinnen Williams trade with the Jets, and Aaron Glenn‘s team used the big man in only three games last season. A rumor Smith was unlikely to make the 2026 Jets roster proved telling, and the team waived him Sunday.
The Dolphins signed Ferrell to their 90-man offseason roster just before training camp; the former top-five pick spent last season with the 49ers and Chargers. Ferrell worked as a full-time starter for the 2023 NFC champion 49ers edition and made 10 starts for the Commanders in 2024. Washington released the veteran in 2025, however. Despite a four-sack season back with San Francisco last year, the 29-year-old edge rusher has settled on the P-squad tier for the time being.
Miami’s QB room consisted of Malik Willis, Quinn Ewers, Cam Miller and Gronowski in training camp. Only Willis remains from that group. The Dolphins now have Cook and trade pickup Kyle McCord as their active-roster QB reserves. Miller has not landed on a practice squad yet, and Gronowski — a rookie UDFA out of Iowa — is unattached now as well.
