As Commanders cornerback Trey Amos and defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and Deatrich Wise continue to recover from injuries they suffered in 2025, they will begin training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list, the team announced. In another roster move, the Commanders placed cornerback Fred Davis II on the active/non-football illness list.
Amos, who debuted as a second-round rookie last year, started in eight of his first 10 games before breaking his fibula in a 44-22 loss to the Lions on Nov. 9. The injury cost Amos the rest of the season and limited him to 32 tackles and six passes defensed. As the nearest defender, he allowed a 71.1% completion rate and a 104.6 passer rating on 38 targets. Pro Football Focus rated Amos’ overall performance 80th out of 104 qualified corners.
When Amos is ready to return, he should continue serving in a prominent role in a Washington corner group that underwent a few changes in the offseason. The Commanders released Marshon Lattimore and lost Jonathan Jones to the Eagles in free agency, but they added veterans Amik Robertson, Rasul Douglas and Ahkello Witherspoon on the open market. Amos, Robertson and Mike Sainristil were reportedly the only corners who were considered locks to make the team before it signed Douglas on July 6. If healthy, they should make up the Commanders’ top four at the position.
Armstrong, now in the last season of a three-year, $33MM contract, went down with a knee injury in a 44-22 loss to Dallas in Week 7. The former Cowboy was one of the Commanders’ most productive defenders at the time, as he had already piled up 24 tackles, seven QB hits and what was then a team-best 5.5 sacks. Washington ranked fifth in the league in sacks when it lost Armstrong, but it slid to 12th place by the end of the year. The club did not re-sign 2025 sacks leader Von Miller, who tallied nine in a part-time role, though it reeled in edge defender Odafe Oweh with a four-year, $100MM offer in free agency and picked up K’Lavon Chaisson on a one-year, $11MM pact.
After spending his first eight seasons in New England, Wise moved to Washington on a one-year, $5MM contract in 2025. The agreement did not go according to plan for either side, as Wise suffered a season-ending quad injury in a 27-18 loss to the Packers in Week 2. He re-signed with the Commanders on a much cheaper deal (one year, $1.45MM), before the market opened in March.
It is unknown how much time Amos, Armstrong and Wise will miss, but all three will be permitted to come off the PUP list and practice in camp when they are medically cleared. However, any player who is still on the list when teams finalize their rosters on Aug. 30 will move to reserve/PUP and will be ineligible for the first four games of the regular season.
