Harrison Smith Addresses Vikings Return

This past weekend, Harrison Smith worked out an agreement to play for the Vikings in 2026. The deal was finalized after training camp, but team and player remained in contact with one another throughout the offseason in this case.
Smith was released in a procedural move this spring, but the 37-year-old never made a retirement announcement. Instead, the possibility of a 15th Minnesota campaign continued to loom as the offseason progressed. Even without any training camp work taking place, Smith is positioned to immediately reprise his role as a key figure in the Vikings’ secondary.
“The heightened sense of gamesmanship amongst the coaches and players; it’s such a fun game,” the six-time Pro Bowler said (via Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune). “You can play all the golf you want, and that’s great, but there’s nothing quite like the heightened sense of game day. That was one thing when I was looking at it, if I can still get a piece of that and be productive, it’s hard to say no.”
Smith added he “kind of knew” a return would be taking place as he continued to train on his own through the spring and summer. Minnesota’s safety room still includes Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson as holdovers from last year, and they are in line to remain starters in 2026. Smith logged a snap share of 85% in 15 games last year, and it would come as no surprise if a similar workload were to be in store this fall.
This latest Vikings pact includes a $6.95MM signing bonus along with roster bonuses and incentives up to a maximum value of $16.25MM. As detailed by Over the Cap, Smith’s contract also contains four void years. As a result, he is set to carry a 2027 cap charge of $8.38MM; that figure is separate from the cost of any future agreement if a 16th Minnesota season is to take place.
